TECON provided comprehensive detailed design services for the revamping and extension of the API “Isola” landside platform, a critical marine infrastructure project for API Refinery in Italy. This complex engineering endeavor involved multidisciplinary design services encompassing structural, geotechnical, and marine engineering disciplines to accommodate new riser bays with an advanced breasting and mooring dolphin system.

The project addressed the growing operational demands of the refinery’s marine terminal, requiring careful integration of new facilities with existing infrastructure. The challenge involved designing a robust platform extension capable of safely handling larger vessels and increased mooring loads while maintaining operational continuity at the active refinery facility. The project demanded precise coordination between structural design, foundation engineering, and marine equipment systems.

Project Scope

The scope encompassed the complete detailed engineering design for the landside berth extension, including all structural elements and marine equipment systems. The platform was designed using composite steel-concrete beam construction, founded on open-end driven steel piles, with dedicated steel structures for the dolphin systems.

Structural Engineering Design

  • Comprehensive geotechnical analysis and structural design of foundation piles capable of withstanding marine environmental loads and vessel berthing forces
  • Design of the berth platform structure utilizing composite steel-concrete beams optimized for load distribution and durability in a marine environment
  • Detailed design of connecting catwalks providing safe access between platform areas and dolphin structures
  • Structural calculations and drawings for all steel and concrete components meeting international marine structure codes

Marine Infrastructure Systems

  • Design of new mooring dolphins engineered to safely absorb and distribute vessel mooring forces
  • Design of breasting dolphins with energy absorption systems to protect both vessels and infrastructure during berthing operations
  • Comprehensive modifications to the existing mooring scheme to integrate new facilities with legacy systems
  • Selection and specification of marine equipment including fenders, bollards, quick-release hooks, and associated hardware

Marine Engineering Analysis

  • Advanced ship mooring analyses using specialized software to simulate vessel behavior under various environmental conditions
  • Evaluation of mooring line tensions, fender reactions, and dolphin loads for different vessel types and loading scenarios
  • Assessment of operational limits considering wind, current, and wave conditions
  • Optimization of dolphin positioning and mooring configuration for maximum operational flexibility and safety

Engineering Approach

TECON’s engineering approach integrated multiple disciplines to deliver a cohesive, safe, and efficient design solution. The geotechnical investigations informed the foundation design, ensuring adequate bearing capacity and minimal settlement in marine soil conditions. Structural design followed rigorous analysis procedures accounting for dead loads, live loads, berthing forces, mooring loads, and environmental actions including seismic considerations.

The marine engineering component utilized state-of-the-art mooring analysis software to simulate realistic vessel-berth interactions, allowing optimization of the mooring arrangement and validation of equipment selections. Throughout the design process, TECON coordinated closely with API Refinery to ensure the new facilities would seamlessly integrate with existing operations while meeting all safety and operational requirements. The detailed design deliverables provided comprehensive construction documentation enabling efficient fabrication and installation of all platform and marine systems.
